Preventing respiratory issues in guinea pigs

This is a specific conversation about Guinea pig supplies — the essentials — ask about yours and get one honest answer for your exact situation.

    inparticular.ai
Respiratory issues are one of the most preventable problems in indoor guinea pigs, and with Himalayans — who tend to be a bit more sensitive than hardier breeds — the indoor environment really does make a big difference. Before I point you toward anything specific, can you tell me a little more about your setup? What bedding are you currently using, how well-ventilated is the room they live in, and have you noticed any sneezing or wheezing already, or are you purely in prevention mode?
Pure prevention — no symptoms yet. They're in our living room, reasonably well ventilated. We're using wood shavings at the moment, the standard stuff from the pet shop.

That's the single biggest thing I'd change. Wood shavings — especially standard pine or cedar — release aromatic oils and fine dust particles that sit right at guinea pig nose-height all day long. For two Himalayans in a living room, that's a constant low-level irritant. Switching bedding is the most impactful prevention step you can take, and it costs almost nothing relative to a vet visit down the line. Is the cage reasonably large, and do you use any fleece liners or hay on top of the shavings, or just shavings alone?
Just shavings, no fleece. The cage is a Ferplast 120 — I know it's on the smaller side for two but we're working on upgrading.

Good that an upgrade is coming — that'll help with air circulation too, as a cramped space concentrates ammonia from urine much faster. For now, the one product I'd recommend immediately is Carefresh Natural paper bedding. It's made from reclaimed paper fibre, it's virtually dust-free, has no aromatic oils, and it absorbs ammonia really well — which is a secondary respiratory irritant people often overlook. It's soft enough that guinea pigs actually like burrowing in it, and it lasts well between changes. It's widely available on Amazon UK in large bags that work out reasonably economical. That one swap — shavings out, Carefresh in — will meaningfully reduce the airborne irritants your two are breathing every day.

That sounds straightforward. Is there anything else worth doing alongside that, like an air purifier?

It can help, and if you already have one it's worth positioning it near their space — but I wouldn't buy one specifically for this unless the room is quite dusty generally. The bedding change does the heavy lifting because it eliminates the source rather than filtering after the fact. What I would add is making sure their hay — which they'll go through a lot of — is good quality and low-dust too. Timothy hay from a reputable brand rather than dusty compressed bales makes a noticeable difference. But honestly, Carefresh plus decent hay covers most of the respiratory risk for healthy indoor guinea pigs. Start there and you'll be in a much better position before any symptoms ever appear.
Really helpful, thank you. I'll order the Carefresh today.

Perfect. Get the large bag — it works out better value and you'll use it quickly with two piggies. And when you do upgrade the cage, look for something with solid base sides rather than wire all the way down, which helps contain the bedding and reduces how much fine material gets kicked into the air. Good luck with them both — Himalayans are lovely, and a bit of prevention now goes a long way.
