Flea treatment for thick-coated dogs like Newfoundlands

This is a specific conversation about Flea treatment for dogs — getting on top of it fast — ask about yours and get one honest answer for your exact situation.

A Newfoundland's coat is one of the densest out there — double-layered and waterproof — so getting a spot-on down to skin level is genuinely difficult, and if it doesn't reach the skin it simply won't absorb properly. Before I suggest an alternative, just to make sure I give you the right advice: is your dog otherwise healthy, and is he on any regular medication from your vet? Also, how bad is the infestation — are you seeing live fleas on him or in the house, or is this more of a prevention situation?
He's healthy, no regular meds. We're definitely seeing live fleas — found them on him and we've been vacuuming the house like mad. Not using anything on the house yet though.

Right, so you've got an active infestation, which means the house needs attention too — around 95% of the flea population is living in your carpets and soft furnishings as eggs, larvae and pupae, not on your dog. Vacuuming is good but it won't kill them all. I'll come back to the home in a second, but first — for a dog like yours, I'd move away from spot-on treatments entirely. The coat issue isn't going to go away. What's his approximate weight? Newfoundlands vary quite a bit, and the product I have in mind is dosed by weight.
    He's about 65kg, big lad.

Perfect, that's exactly what I needed. My clear recommendation for him is NexGard (afoxolaner) — it's a monthly chewable beef-flavoured tablet, so the coat becomes completely irrelevant. It's a prescription product in the UK, meaning you'll need a vet prescription, but many online pharmacies like VetUK or Animed Direct make that straightforward and it works out cheaper than buying through a clinic. NexGard kills fleas within 8 hours and keeps working for a full month. At 65kg you'd need the largest dose — NexGard XL covers dogs 25–50kg, so your vet would prescribe the appropriate size or may suggest the sister product Bravecto (fluralaner) which is also a chew and covers up to 56kg — worth asking them specifically given his size. Either way, the chewable route is the right call for a Newfoundland.
That makes a lot of sense. What do I do about the house though?

For the home, get an insecticidal household spray that contains an IGR — insect growth regulator — alongside the adulticide. Indorex Defence Household Flea Spray is the one I'd point you to; it's widely available on Amazon UK and kills adult fleas on contact while the IGR stops eggs and larvae developing for up to 12 months. Spray all carpets, skirting boards, under furniture and any soft furnishings. Wash his bedding at 60°C at the same time. Vacuum again 48 hours after spraying. Do the dog treatment and the home treatment on the same day if you can — that's the bit most people miss and it's why infestations come back.

Brilliant, really helpful. I'll contact the vet today about the NexGard and pick up the Indorex.

That's exactly the right plan. One last thing — after the first month, keep him on a monthly chewable year-round rather than dropping back to a spot-on in summer. Fleas are a 12-month problem in heated homes, and with a coat like his you'll always be fighting the application battle otherwise. Good luck with him.

Your situation is probably different. Get a specific answer for yours.
