Switching a Weimaraner from raw to kibble

This is a specific conversation about Dog food — finding the right one — ask about yours and get one honest answer for your exact situation.

Moving back to kibble from raw is more common than people think — life changes, schedules shift, and raw feeding is genuinely demanding to do properly. The good news is that a healthy four-year-old Weimaraner can transition without drama if you do it gradually. Before I point you toward a specific food, a couple of things would help: how is your dog's weight and energy at the moment, and was there any particular reason you went raw in the first place — digestive issues, coat problems, or just a recommendation you followed?
He's in good shape, good weight, no real health issues. We went raw about two years ago because someone at the dog park said it was better, but honestly it's just a lot of faff. No skin issues or anything like that.

That's a good position to be switching from — a healthy dog with no underlying sensitivities gives you real flexibility in what you choose. Weimaraners are an active, muscular breed and they do better on a kibble with genuinely high meat content rather than the cereal-heavy midrange stuff. What are you currently feeding in terms of the raw — a commercial raw like Natures Menu or Nutriment, or are you putting it together yourself?

We've been using Nutriment mostly. Chicken and turkey varieties.

Good — that means his gut is used to high-quality protein and minimal filler, which actually narrows things down usefully. You don't want to drop him into a standard supermarket kibble after two years on Nutriment; his digestion will struggle and you'll think the kibble is the problem when really it's just the contrast. I'd go with Orijen Original dry dog food. It's 85% meat ingredients, uses a range of proteins including chicken, turkey, and fish, and the nutritional profile is close enough to what he's been getting that the transition will be much smoother. It's not cheap, but for a Weimaraner his size it's the right call — and it's still considerably less work than raw.
How do I actually do the switch? Just start mixing it in?
    inparticular.ai
Yes, mix it in gradually over about ten to fourteen days. Start at roughly 25% kibble to 75% raw for the first three or four days, then go 50/50 for another four days, then 75% kibble, and finally all kibble. Because he's going from raw to dry, make sure he's drinking well — kibble has far less moisture than raw, so some dogs drink noticeably more in the first week or two, which is completely normal. If his stools go soft or loose at any stage, just slow the transition down rather than pushing through. One other thing: Orijen is calorie-dense, so check the feeding guide on the pack and start at the lower end of the range for his weight. Weimaraners can put on condition quickly if you overfeed a rich kibble.
That's really helpful. Is Orijen easy to get hold of?

It's widely available on Amazon UK, and a number of independent pet shops stock it too. The 11.4kg bag is the most economical size for a dog his weight — works out significantly cheaper per meal than the smaller bags. Set up a Subscribe and Save if you're buying through Amazon and you'll knock another percentage off. You're making a sensible move — raw done well is great, but kibble done well is absolutely fine for a healthy adult Weimaraner, and the consistency of a quality dry food has its own advantages.

Your situation is probably different. Get a specific answer for yours.
