Best water setup for a new kitten

This is a specific conversation about Cat hydration — getting cats to drink more — ask about yours and get one honest answer for your exact situation.

A newly rehomed kitten — what a brilliant time to get the water setup right. Cats evolved in arid environments and have a naturally low thirst drive, which means most cats on dry food are chronically underhydrated over their lifetime, and kidney disease is the leading cause of death in older cats. The two most effective ways to counter this are a water fountain and wet food. Before I point you in a direction, a couple of quick questions: is your kitten on dry food, wet food, or a mix? Does she have any health concerns flagged by the breeder or rescue? And have you looked at fountains before, or are you starting from scratch?
She's on dry food at the moment — the rescue sent us home with what she was eating. No health issues, clean bill of health. Never had a fountain, completely starting from scratch.

Good to know. Dry food only is worth keeping an eye on — I'd honestly encourage introducing some wet food over the next few weeks even if it's just one meal a day, because a kitten building kidney-healthy habits early makes a real difference long term. On the fountain side, for a kitten this age there are a few things that matter: the flow should be gentle enough not to startle her, it should be easy to dismantle and clean (kittens are messy), and ideally it should be on the smaller side so she doesn't feel overwhelmed by it. Can I ask — how many cats will be using it? Just her, or do you have other pets too?
Just her for now. It's a small flat, so nothing too bulky either.

Perfect — that makes this easy. I'd go with the Catit Flower Fountain (the 3-litre version). It's compact so it won't dominate a small space, the flower top creates a gentle trickling stream that's genuinely irresistible to most kittens — moving water triggers their instinct to drink — and it has three flow settings so you can start slow and gentle while she's still finding her feet in a new home. The filter is straightforward to replace, it comes apart fully for cleaning, and it's one of the most reliably stocked fountains on Amazon UK at a very reasonable price. At three months old she'll grow into it rather than outgrow it, and it'll see her through to adulthood easily.

That sounds great. Where should I put it — near her food bowl?
    inparticular.ai
Actually, keep it away from her food bowl — ideally in a separate room or at least a metre or two away. Cats instinctively avoid drinking near where they eat because in the wild, water close to a carcass could be contaminated. Putting the fountain in a different spot, somewhere she passes regularly like a hallway or beside her sleeping area, will encourage her to use it more. Also worth knowing: place it away from walls at first so the light reflecting off the water is visible — that often helps kittens notice it for the first time.
Really useful, thank you. I had no idea about the food bowl placement.

It's one of those things nobody tells you! You're doing exactly the right thing setting this up now — a kitten who grows up drinking well is far less likely to have urinary or kidney problems at seven, ten, or fifteen years old. The Catit Flower Fountain is the one to go for. Good luck with the new arrival — three months is such a lovely age.
