    Introducing a second budgie safely

This is a specific conversation about Bird supplies — getting the setup right — ask about yours and get one honest answer for your exact situation.

Bringing a second budgie home is a lovely idea — budgies genuinely thrive with company — but the introduction process really matters. Skipping quarantine or rushing the face-to-face stage is the most common reason pairings go wrong, and it can stress or injure both birds. Before anything else: how long have you had your first budgie, do you know the sex of either bird, and what cage are they currently living in? That'll help me point you in the right direction.
I've had Mango for about two years, he's male. The new one is also male, about 12 weeks old, coming from a breeder next week. Mango is in a fairly large cage, maybe 60cm wide. I don't have anything for the new bird yet.

Good setup to work with. Two males generally get along well, which helps. The critical thing now is that the new bird needs to go into a separate cage for at least 30 days — ideally in a different room for the first two weeks, then side by side for the second two. This protects Mango from any illness the new bird might be carrying asymptomatically, and it lets them get used to each other through the bars before any shared space. You need a dedicated quarantine and introduction cage for this. What's your rough budget, and do you have space for a second cage in your home long-term, or is this purely for the introduction period?
Mainly for the introduction, though I'd keep it as a travel or backup cage after. Budget is flexible, under £50 ideally. Nothing too huge.

The Vision Bird Cage Model S01 fits this perfectly. It's around £35–45 on Amazon UK, compact enough not to take over a room, but genuinely well-designed — the wire spacing is correct for budgies at 9.5mm so no risk of head entrapment, the base has a deep seed-catching skirt which makes quarantine cleanup much easier, and it comes with basic accessories so you're not buying extras immediately. The solid plastic base also means you can set it up right next to Mango's cage during weeks three and four without seed and droppings crossing between them, which matters for disease control. Once introductions are done it works well as a travel cage or spare. I'd avoid cheap flat-pack cages at this price point — the bar spacing is often inconsistent and the latches are poor.

That sounds good. How will I know when they're ready to move in together?

Watch for mutual preening through the bars — that's the clearest green light. You also want to see them eating calmly when the cages are adjacent, no sustained aggressive displays, and ideally them actively seeking each other out rather than ignoring or fleeing. Most budgie pairs reach this point somewhere between week four and week six. When you do the first shared session, do it in a neutral space like a play gym rather than putting the new bird straight into Mango's cage — Mango will be territorial about his established space. Supervised free-fly time together first, then move to the shared cage once you've seen them interact well for a few sessions.
Really helpful, thank you. I'll grab the Vision S01.
